A Little Gold Goes Well with Everything

Whatever the forecast, our side of Taranaki Street is always the sunny side of the street.

If your skin tans reasonably easily, moderate indoor tanning is a smart way to maximise the potential benefits and minimise the risks of too much - or too little - sunlight. In New Zealand we're all conscious of the thinning of the ozone layer and how quickly skin can burn. Indoor tanning gives you control over your exposure, but of course it must be used sensibly.

Please read the advice in the section below before beginning a tanning session.

The new sun capsule VHR will launch your tan to levels never before attainable with conventional sun beds.

What is VHR?
VHR refers to the patented lamp which has a very high output - 160 watts, with a built-in reflector.  The reflector intensifies and focuses 100% of the UV output directly forward, maximizing the performance of the lamp.

How is it possible to get a rich, dark tan with such short exposure times?
Not only are the Cosmolux VHR lamps more powerful, there are more of them.  Conventional sun lamps produce 100 watts of power, so a 24-lamp bed would produce 2400 watts of power.  Comparatively, the 160 watt Cosmolux VHR lamp produces almost 180 watts when used in the Sun Capsule VHR.  Multiply that by 48 lamps, and the result is about 10,000 watts of power.  So you get the best possible tan in the shortest amount of time.

What is the difference between the Sun Capsule VHR and that of a tanning bed?
Because the UVA is more than three times higher, you will develop a noticeable darker, richer tan from the Sun Capsule VHR than from conventional tanning beds in about 1/3  the time.

Can I use both the Sun Capsule VHR and a tanning bed to develop a tan?
The Sun Capsule VHR is much more powerful than conventional tanning beds, so use caution if you are switching between them.  Although the Sun Capsule VHR gives you a richer, darker tan than a conventional tanning bed, don’t try to get there in one or two sessions.  You’ll get a darker, more natural longer-lasting tan when you attain it gradually.

Advice for Stand N Tan
  • The maximum time that is provided for the sun capsule is 10 minutes.
  • Clean goggles are provided, and we advise that you bring sunscreen to apply if you do not wish to tan your face.
  • A tan is best achieved gradually and we recommend that you increase your time every 2nd or 3rd session by no more than one minute - DO NOT EXCEED 3 sessions a week.  The trained staff at IS Bliss will assess your skin type and advise the best program for you.
  • Always follow instructions from the trained staff at Is Bliss.

What you should know before using the Sun Solarium

  • Always follow instructions from the trained staff at Is Bliss
  • We do not advise that pregnant women use the sun solarium. This is because as your body heats up it becomes distressing for the baby, please check with your doctor first.
  • Remember using sun solariums pose some of the same dangers as outside tanning
  • If you do not tan well outside, you will not tan well on a solarium. We advise people with particularly fair skin not to use the solarium at all.

Is Bliss has two sunless tanning options –click here for more information.

  • Always wear the goggles provided. They are provided for your protection as the UV light can damage your eyes. Closing your eyes is not adequate protection, nor is the use of sunglasses.
  • For best results – DO NOT tan every day (this applies to sun solariums and tanning out side) as you will get a lesser result. It takes 24 – 48 hours for the melanin (the pigment that makes your skin tun brown) to release. With out a break in tanning the melanin releases less pigment, making it harder to tan.
  • Do not tan on a sun solarium and in natural sun light on the same day.
  • If you are using any medications that are UV sensitive, tanning is not recommended. Also be aware of any perfumes that have ingredients that are reactive with sunlight, as this could cause staining and/or irritation.
  • We advise that you use tanning accelerator lotions when using the solariums. They keep your skin hydrated and in good condition while tanning. They help to develop your tan faster, reducing the time need on the solarium, optimizing the session and increasing the life of your tan. These products do not protect you from burning and contain no SPF (Sun Protection Factor).
  • The staff at Is Bliss will discuss with you and take you through the Skin Depth/Tone Chart. They will discuss the length of the sessions best suited for your skin tone. This time will be taken to ensure you do not go on too long and burn. Remember burning isn't tanning - it does damage your skin.
  • For the best results - do not tan everyday as you will get a lesser result. It takes 24-48 hours for the melanin (the pigment that can make your skin turn brown) to release. Without a break in tanning the melanin releases less pigment, making it harder to tan.
  • Turning up more than 5 minutes late will affect the time of your session.
  • Cancellations must be at least 2 hours prior.
  • No shows will be charged to your account.
  • Towels are provided at the front desk should you require one.

Spray Tan

Spray Tan (Sunless Tanning)

It is a well know fact that excessive exposure to ultraviolet light makes the skin age faster, however with a Spray Tan you get a beautiful deep golden bronze colour with no harmful effects from the sun.  Spray Tan typically lasts up to 10 days or longer, does not leave the skin feeling sticky to touch and has no fragrance.

To prepare the skin for a Spray Tan application it is advised to exfoliate, wax where desired and moisturize the night before treatment.  Avoid wearing jewellery and deodorant during treatment as this may cause uneven tanning.  To make the Spray Tan as comfortable as possible wear loose dark clothing as excess solution remains on the skin for several hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Spray Tan, tan the skin without the sun?
A: The active ingredient in the Spray Tan, DHA (dihydroxyacetone) causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the top layer of the skin to produce a natural looking tan, but without the damaging effect of UV rays.

Q: Is this process safe?
A: DHA is government approved and has been in use for over 40 years without any harmful effects reported.  Some people are allergic to it and may break out in a simple rash.

Q: What should I wear?
A: It is always better to wear loose dark clothing for your appointment, any pressure from tight fitting clothing may cause marks in your tan. Disposable underwear will be supplied.

Q: Will Spray Tan stain my clothes?
A: Spray Tan washes out of cotton but will stain light colored nylon.  Excess solution remains on the skin for several hours and it is normal for some of the initial bronzer to wash off when you first shower.

Q: To maintain my tan how often should I have a Spray Tan?
A: Your Spray Tan lasts for 10 days or longer.  To maintain it, re-apply once a week or so, depending on you’re skin type and how deep you want your tan.

Q: What should I do before I get a Spray Tan?
A: To prepare your skin, exfoliate (paying attention to rough skin areas like knees, elbows, ankles and the tops of your feet), wax or shave the night before treatment.  The better condition your skin is in the better your tan will be.  Do not moisturize immediately before treatment, as this may cause an uneven application, remove all make up if tanning of the face and neck is desired.

Spray Tan - After Treatment Information

Avoid showering, exercise and swimming for at least 10 hours, showering the following morning is the best option and do not be concerned if some of the initial bronzer washes off.

Apply moisturizer twice daily after showering.  This reduces the rate at which your skin naturally exfoliates and will keep your tan looking better for longer.

Other considerations in maintaining your tan are to avoid long baths, hot spas and extended swimming sessions.  Shorter sessions are preferable.  Also avoid products designed to exfoliate your skin.  The more abrasive you are to your skin the sooner you will lose your tan.
